![]() ![]() 1 Concluding comments deal with issues that have as a central tenet the acceptability of the stigmatisation of young mothers. ![]() It is important to begin with a discussion of the discourses that frame and contextualise contemporary young motherhood – those of adolescence, sexuality, reproduction and motherhood: subsequently the methodological basis of the underpinning research will be briefly visited before opening up to the voices of young mothers. ![]() In this prefatory article the voices of the people in the glare of this attention will be used to illuminate something of the lived experiences of young pregnancy and parenthood. This figure represents a year on year decrease in rates since 2006 and a total reduction of 7424 births since the inception of the Teenage Pregnancy Strategy (Office for National Statistics, 2010). The country is described as experiencing an epidemic, with the highest rates of young pregnancy and parenthood recorded in Western Europe: 40,591 live births to women under the age of 20 in England and Wales in 2010. Progressing into the twenty-first century, issues of young pregnancy and parenthood in the United Kingdom continue to be the focus of political, media and public attention. ![]()
